About the class....
In English 9/10, students develop proficiency, confidence and fluency in reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing. The course introduces students to classical and young adult literature and various ways of communicating effectively. The study of literature includes classical and young adult fiction, nonfiction, drama and poetry. Students read and respond to a variety of authors, texts and genres, and share responses to extend understanding, create interpretations, make connections, and develop appreciation. Students write in a variety of formats, with an emphasis on writing to express ideas, to inform and to persuade. Students develop communication skills through class discussions and presentations. The course also integrates grammar, usage and vocabulary development throughout all of its phases. English 9/10 prepares students to take the CAHSEE by teaching key skills throughout the curriculum.
Reading Comprehension (Fiction)
Class Expectations:
Be responsible for your choices, actions, and belongings.
Always be prompt and prepared to be academically focused throughout the class period.
Respect yourself, your peers, and all CHS/WHS staff. They deserve it and so do YOU!
Notes will be taken, read, and subject to being reported to administration.
Eating & drinking anything without permission, except water in a clear, plastic container is prohibited.
Stay seated unless granted permission to be otherwise.

Reading Comprehension (Fiction)
- Understand how the author uses foreshadowing, theme, and conflict to accomplish purpose.
- Recognize author’s clues to reveal character’s motivations, traits, and influence.
- Identify how the author accomplishes purpose through character, voice, and narrator.
- Identify point of view and assess for reliability.
- Closely read (search, annotate, and look for details) a text to determine tone/mood, purpose.
- Closely read non-fiction passage and identify key details
- Analyze a document to determine author’s purpose and interpret the information
- Including references
- Understand the main idea
- Judge credibility of the author
- Determine tone
- Summarize key points
- Recognize the difference between evidence and analysis.
- Identify appropriate examples of the following:
- Thesis
- Topic sentence
- Identify simple subject(s) and verb(s)
